THE 36th FNC AND THE SAT PRESENT THE FUTURE OF CINEMA PHASE 1: IMMERSION The 36th Festival du Nouveau Cinéma and the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT) are proud to join forces for an exploration of the future of cinema. From October 11 to 20, the FNC and SAT will present a thematic exhibition that delves into the new creative possibilities opened up by digital technology. The exhibition will be complemented by a series of lectures, debates and performances. The Future of Cinema is the first of an annual series of events. The theme for the inaugural edition is Immersion. All activities are free and held at the SAT Montreal already enjoys international renown for its impressive concentration of public and private players in movies and high tech; with that in mind, the event seeks to become a focal point of debates on cinema and new technology. Through the prism of new technology, The Future of Cinema invites the public to consider what the future of creativity holds. EXHIBITION: FANTASTIC VOYAGES From October 10 to 21, daily from noon to midnight, every space in the SAT will become a series of immersive new-media installations that put the visitor at centre stage. The installations will take viewers on a physical and mental journey to the heart of sound and image; these innovative works have never before been exhibited in Montreal. Experienced in sequence, the installations will surprise visitors and alter their senses by blurring the lines between the real and the virtual. The installations, by Masaki Fujihata, Grégory Chatonsky, Nicolas Reeves and Hendrick Dusollier, will expose the public to the latest developments in immersive entertainment. For example: The stereoscopic 3D world of SANDDETM, a device developed by IMAX®, where several NFB animated films will be shown. The Panoscope 360° immersive device created by Luc Courchesne, in which the spectator moves virtually. The Cyclorama, where seven 360° works by artists from La Fabrique Numérique swill be exhibited. Also worth noting is the “home cinema” version of Late Fragment, an interactive film developed by the Canadian Film Centre and the NFB, in which the viewer directs the story. LECTURES AND DEBATES: THE AUDIENCE AT THE CENTRE With the goal of sparking a far-reaching reflection on the possibilities of cinema’s future directions, the FNC and the SAT will host a series of thematic lectures and debates for the public and industry professionals, in the SAT café daily at 1 p.m.: − Friday, October 12: The future of movie theatres and immersive devices (cinema and immersion) − Saturday, October 13: Stereoscopic 3D: a comeback story (cinema and immersion) − Friday, October 19: DIY cinema (cinema and new platforms) − Saturday, October 20: Movies meet video games (cinema and gaming) FESTIVAL VIDEOBLOG For the ten days of the Festival, in partnership with the NFB’s Parole Citoyenne/CitizenShift, festivalgoers are invited to come to the SAT café to share written comments, videos, photos, reviews and impressions by joining our team of bloggers/filmmakers/reporters, Mélanie Charbonneau, Mathieu Vachon and Annie Le Cavalier.
